THE DIVINE HOMECOMING: SHISHIROTSAV
Nestled along the serene banks of the Mandovi River, Kumbarjua (Cumbarjua)is a charming island town that embodies the tranquil essence of Goa. Located just 20 kilometers east of Panjim, the state's vibrant capital. Kumbarjua is known for the occasion of 'Shishirotsav', which signifies the arrival of Shri Shantadurga Kumbharjuvekarin back to her home. Devi's temple is situated in Marcel but every year during the time of Shigmotsav she visits Kumbarjua and this festival is known as Shishirotsav.
As the sun sets on the eve of Goddess Shantadurga's arrival, the sacred ritual of 'Haldane' begins.The five panchayatan devtas are adored in yellow and the priest carries the turmeric water to each deity signalling the start of Shishirotsav.
As the festive spirit of Gudi Padwa fills the air, Goddess Shantadurga makes a majestic arrival in Kumbarjua, gliding serenely down the river on a decorated boat. She then proceeds to the vibrant Sarangi Aakh, where a kaleidoscope of flowers and twinkling lights await her presence. For the next eight enchanting days, Sarangi Aakh transforms into a spiritual haven, as thousands of devotees flock to seek Devi's divine blessings and bask in her loving presence.
Gudi Padwa celebrations unfold.Devi's palki (palanquin) procession spreads love and blessings to over 1,000 homes, accompanied by villagers and heartfelt pooja ceremonies. Married women offer uty, seeking Devi's divine grace. Returning to Sarangi Aakh, Devi leaves a trail of joy and devotion. Sarangi Aakh shines bright with Devi's arrival. Pooja, aarti, and traditional Garane rituals blend with vibrant Dulvat celebrations, as gulal fills the air. Devi's joyful procession continues in Marcel, blessing homes with love and devotion.
Devi's procession comes full circle at the temple, where the Jalmi honor her with a symbolic nazar, bringing the vibrant celebrations comes to an end,yet keeping Devi's love and blessings with them forever.
